Community restaurants are spaces where people can to come together to eat cheaply and nutritiously.

They were once a common feature of British society, reaching a peak of around 2,500 in the 1940s (double the current number of McDonald’s restaurants in the UK).

This briefing discusses why it makes sense to invest in them now in the context of the cost of living crisis, the government's national levelling up agenda and the need for fresh thinking about more sustainable approaches to food and fuel security.
