The Food Foundation is one of eight partner organisations working on Sustainable and Healthy Food Systems (SHEFS), a global research programme funded by the Wellcome Trust.
SHEFS is a global research programme that uses novel techniques to generate and synthesise evidence, to help decision makers create policies that deliver nutritious and healthy diets in an environmentally sustainable and socially equitable manner. The focus of SHEFS is bridging the gap between science and practice. The project unites partners in different countries to work closely together and share methods, data, knowledge and expertise from a wide range of fields. SHEFS partner organisations are based across the UK, India and South Africa. UK partners include the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UCL, City University and SOAS.
The Food Foundation is involved in SHEFS to help communicate research outputs effectively to policy makers to inform and influence policy decisions. We also support SHEFS to engage with schools, cities and the wider public.

Birmingham: Our Food Story
This photovoice case study used a participatory, photo-led method of community engagement to understand food system challenges and policy solutions to fruit and vegetable consumption from the perspective of low income mothers in Birmingham, and to enable community members to share their views with policy makers through a photography exhibition
The Food Foundation has led schools engagement events for SHEFS, including with 426 children and young people across the country as part of the National Food Strategy youth consultation.
